At the RIC

Monday, November 9th: Beverly arrived at RIC two weeks ago today and has had a full schedule of evaluations, therapy sessions, outings, and new experiences. She arrived with a long list of goals and is progressing towards reaching them. One of her primary wishes is to become more independent. She recently prepared her own peanut butter sandwich in the "apartment kitchen" at RIC which is set up like a home. She was very proud of herself but says it took so much effort she was no longer hungry for it! She feels this is definitely something she can begin doing at home. She has given herself a facial, continues to work out on the exercise mat, and has been working on sitting up in bed with the use of a special webbed "ladder" connected to the foot of the bed. The therapists continue to find little ways to make her life easier, with creative tips and ideas. Her computer tech has made working with her speech recognition program much easier!

She also has group therapy sessions with other patients at RIC. We were so proud that she kept up with the young men during the hour-long arm exercises set to music. And these guys are in their 20's! Her first aquatic therapy is scheduled for Wednesday and she can't wait for that. (she likely is anticipating that warm water!)

Beverly is so happy that Pauletta lives in Chicago, even through she is an hour away. She has spent nearly everyday at RIC following her progress and being a great source of encouragement. Many of Pauletta and Steve's family and friends have also visited Beverly and all are so impressed with her progress and positive attitude. (They've been sneaking in delicious alternatives to hospital food!). Beverly has also been able to leave the hospital setting with Pauletta and Steve, driving her power chair to nearby restaurants and shopping. The fresh air is great for her and the weather has been clear and sunny.

You may have tried to reach her by phone and been disappointed that there's no answer. This is simply because of her busy schedule! Perhaps the best time to reach her is after dinner and before her shower: 6:15 to 7:00pm may be your best chance. She does have her laptop with her so you can also email her at beverlykohl@scbglobal.net.

We're still not sure of her discharge date but will let you know as soon as we hear. We've posted more photos on the photo link. Check them out!
