January 2012

So… does everyone else feel that time is just flying by? I waited eagerly for my Christmas visit with Ken, Nelly, Christopher and Samantha.  Then – the time passed all too quickly.  We have a wonderful two weeks together. They arrived in time to put up my Christmas tree and stayed along enough to put everything away!  Nelly was a wonderful help with my daily care and Samantha helped with the cooking. She made a wonderful pumpkin pie for Christmas Day with Mother’s pie crust recipe (the best ever!).  We filled our days with trips, games, great food and stories.  We also were able to spend a couple of days at Greenleaf State Park in a cabin especially designed to be accessible for wheelchairs.  Ramps were everywhere; a large deck gave us great views of the lake; and the fireplace made for warm, cozy evenings.  A special thanks goes to my niece Susan who arranged everything for this trip and came along to help with my care.

About 10 days after Ken and family left, Janie came for a week.  She drove me down to Ravenna, TX for a quick visit our sister Chris.  Chris is working at Pin Oak Kennels and I finally got to see the place and stay in the special guest house there.  I certainly see why Chris loves it there!  We were also able to celebrate Chris’s birthday with about 12 people she works with.
We were driving back home and were about 20 minutes from Tahlequah when we got a call from Pauletta  telling us that Mother had fallen and was on her way to the Tahlequah hospital.  We drove immediately there and arrived in time to hear the bad news:  when she fell, she broke her left hip.  Surgery was the next day and Mother will remain in the hospital and/or in rehab for a few more weeks.  She has been so independent - especially for 92 ½ years old - we are certainly hoping she heals quickly so she can resume her stay in assisted living in Tahlequah.
I still feel so lucky to have my wonderful care givers Lori, Sara and Hannah.  We have had some challenges with my health are daily care, but they are always so available and ready to do whatever it takes.  I couldn’t do this without their help and without Leonard and my sisters.
My next trip is to Chicago in May for a one-year checkup from my bladder surgery.  Thank you all for keeping me in your prayers.

  2. Wish I was there to help out! But I am only an airplane flight away! Mom is one feisty lady, and she will recover, no doubt. Heritage Place would not be the same without her! Love you,
    Pauletta
