My Summer

Janie is on her way to Alaska with Gary and her grandson, Josh; Pauletta is enjoying some much deserved at home time in Chicago; Chris is busy training her dog and getting ready for competition; and I was unable to talk Leonard into writing this update. So I guess it is up to me.

I have still been working out on my MOTOmed trying to add the miles that it would take to get to California. I haven't made as much progress as I had hoped to do. I haven't even made it to Interstate 40 so I still have a long way to go. This week I have a good excuse, I have been working in Vacation Bible School at my church. I have really enjoyed the week. I taught the daily Bible story to kindergarten/first grade kids. I had three different groups of five and six-year-olds. About 30 kids in all. I started out the week by telling the kids about my accident and explaining how my chair works. The kids are great and did not seem the least bit bothered by my handicap. And there is nothing to compare to their sweet hugs. My grand niece, Sarah, helped me all week. I couldn't have done it without her and of course all the kids love Sarah too.

Linda McGarry came to visit me the 1st of June. We had started working together at Washington Hospital in Fremont in the emergency department in 1980. We had a wonderful time reminiscing about the “old days”, talking about old friends, nurses and doctors and other hospital staff and talking about how much nursing and medical care has changed in the last 40+ years.

I am still cold all the time, which is a common effect of a spinal cord injury. While everyone else is complaining about the heat (it's been in the high 90s with a heat index of over 100) I am loving it! I love setting out in the hot Oklahoma summer sun but I have been warned to be careful and not over-do- it, I can get overheated without even realizing it.

My newest toy is a NOOK. A very special friend gave me money for Christmas to spend just on myself. I waited until I found just the right thing and when I saw the advertisement for Barnes & Noble e-book I knew that was just the right thing. I love to read but I've had so much trouble turning the pages that it takes me twice as long to read a book. With my e-book I just have to push a little button on the side and it turns the page.

Now I am looking forward to Ken and Nelly and Chris and Samantha’s visit. They will be here July 2 and on July 4 we will all celebrate Ken's birthday.

I hope you all realize how much I appreciate your cares and concerns and prayers, and that you are still interested in this blog. I still need that. Love to you all… until next time
