September 18, 2010

Today it has been two years since my accident. In the beginning I thought I would be recovered by now but my doctor tells me that, at this point, I cannot expect to have much more improvement. However, I will continue to ride my Motomed cycle, work out on my exercise mat and do my arm exercises. Even if I can't walk, I'll still be as strong as I can.

The first thing this morning, I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers from Janie and everyone who has been so encouraging to me for these past two years.

I did have another challenge to face this month. Every year the Cherokee Nation has their annual Cherokee National Holiday. They have a parade, arts and crafts and food vendors and they have a powwow and Indian games out at the cultural grounds. My dear friend Cindy had the big idea that I should drive my wheelchair from my home to the parade. Tahlequah is an old town and I live in one of the older parts of town just three blocks from the main street. They have made major improvements in the streets and sidewalks downtown and they are all easily wheelchair accessible. The sidewalks from my house leading down to mainstreet have yet to be upgraded. The challenge was to get from my home to downtown. But with Cindy's help and encouragement I made it and enjoyed the parade.

Another challenge was going to the high school gym. The Tahlequah High School Gym is new. I think it is two years old and very wheelchair accessible. It was easy to get in and watch Sarah, my niece, playing in her first home volleyball game. Unfortuneately, they lost the game.

From the beginning, my cat, Deacon, did not like the whole thing. He was afraid of my wheelchair, he wouldn't get on my bed, he wouldn't have much to do with me and was especially afraid of my Hoyer lift and sling. But now he seems to be okay with anything. Last night he spent most of the night in my bed.

Again I want to thank everyone for continued support and encouragement.
