As anxious as Steve and I are to get home to Chicago to sleep in our own bed for the first time since December 27, I am sad that my two weeks with Beverly are drawing to an end. She continues to inspire me with her sweet spirit and positive attitude! When we went to see the cardiologist this week (all is well in that respect) Dr. Mehta said to Beverly "You are so lucky to have the wonderful, supportive family that you have." Of course, Beverly answered and agreed. A couple of minutes later, I said to the doctor,..."No, WE are the lucky ones to have a sister like her." Truer words were never spoken!
The improvement from my last time with her is remarkable! Instead of 24 hours a day of intense medical and personal care-giving, as was the case during my last stay when she just got out of the hospital, and our energies were literally zapped physically and mentally, this time, we were able to have some fun, work on her computer, get out in the van to go to therapy, see Mom, enjoy out-of-town visitors, go on business errands, read books, enjoy manicures and pedicures from niece Susan, and much more. We had even planned to go to church, but for various reasons, that did not happen. Today, Saturday, Steve drove us to the Amish Cheese factory, about a 45 minute drive from Tahlequah, Niece Sarah (my granddaughter) went with us and we had a great time. It was a milestone of sorts, as this was the first time Beverly has been to a restaurant since the accident on September 18! She, of course, did great! I went in first to check it out and make sure she could maneuver, and when I gave the okay sign, we headed in to shop (they sell her favorite "chow chow") and have lunch. It was so fresh and delicious and after our sandwiches and pasta salad, she shared a small cherry pie with Sarah.
When we arrived home, there was a group of teenagers from church, just finishing up raking her lawn. Several bags of yard debris were piled at the street. They all came to give her a hug, and once again brought tears of gratitude to her eyes. After we took a picture with them, she told me that she had taught most of those girls in Sunday School when they were only three years old!
Janie arrived from Phoenix yesterday, and is resting out at Chris's house on Lake Tenkiller until she comes to take over care giving tomorrow. I think Beverly is anxiously awaiting a facial, which is Janie's specialty treat. I am sure will be better at doing updates than I have been!
Thanks for your continued concern, love and prayers for us all!
