At the 1:00 visit Deedy looked much better and was eager to eat and drink, so the BiPAP was replaced with a device that goes through her nose only. She had some cranberry juice and the orange sherbet which she loves. This "nose" device doesn't give her as much oxygen so she tired pretty quickly and the respiratory therapist changed her back to the BiPAP. She doesn't have to use as much energy with this system so doesn't tire out as quickly. Initially I think we were all most concerned about when/whether Deedy would walk again. I'm realizing that's not the most important or critical issue. It is, of course, her breathing. With a spinal cord injury so many other things are affected, and I think we weren't prepared for all this. Even though at this time she is off the ventilator, she is still struggling to get enough oxygen into her lungs. If this continues it is a possibility that she will be on the ventilator again. And we've been told it would be a safer way to transport her back to Oklahoma. Be assured she will not be returned to Oklahoma until it is completely safe.
I didn't get to see Dr. Mitchell the surgeon but met briefly with his PA, Mark Loupe. He said that as a result of the successful surgery, she is no longer in danger of any additional damage to her neck or spine. He knows she is eager to get back to Oklahoma. He said the transfer procedure begins with finding an Intensivist (intensive care physician) at a Tulsa hospital who is willing to take over her care. If this person knew about Deedy and her beautiful spirit, he/she would want to take over for the Baton Rouge staff. Pauletta is trying to locate such a person. If anyone has a contact at a Tulsa hospital, please let us know by sending an email.
I know Deedy will be so glad to see Chris at the 9pm visit!
