From Pauletta

Dear friends and family,

We continue to be impressed and heartened by the outpouring of love and friendship of you all! We are experiencing a lot of ups and downs, and as long as the ups outnumber the downs, we will be fine.

Today we were encouraged by the length of time that Deedy was awake and blinking and nodding her responses to our questions. She cannot yet make a "thumbs up" sign, but can almost make an "ok" sign with her thumb and first finger. We believe she hears and understands everything we say to her. I will admit that I totally lost it today when I saw tears in her eyes, but it must be a good sign that she is aware enough to respond that way. I don't know if she was happy or sad, but it was probably a little of both.

Overnight she had a small heart episode (heart racing too fast) but was able to pull herself out of it with no mechanical assistance. They continue to reduce the aid of the ventilator, although she does still need assistance breathing. She did receive two units of blood today which is understandable because they did not give her any blood during surgery yesterday. Her slightly elevated temperature was quickly fixed with Tylenol (through her feeding tube), Oh, the stories we will relate when she has recovered!

The nurses and staff know her story and she has quickly become a favorite here. They are giving her the best care possible and continue to give us hope.

Pauletta
