This was a good day! Beverly had a good night's sleep and even though she was still a little groggy, she had several good therapy sessions. She began the morning using a hand brace that holds a spoon. She was able to feed herself some of her honey nut cheerios with the spoon. Two different therapists (speech and occupational) had discussed Beverly with the head of rehabilitation services at the OU Medical Center. They both are very interested in her success and shared her story with him. Bill came by her room and did an assessment of her strength and breathing levels. She is further advanced than he expected someone with her type of injury would be at this point. He continued to be impressed with her strength in her upper body and repeated several times that she has 'great potential.' He showed us some new upper body exercises for her to do daily that will strengthen some of her alternate breathing muscles. He also performed some new breathing exercises designed to build up her reserves. Beverly will be his only inpatient and he seems truly excited to work with her twice daily. His optimism definitely rubbed off on Beverly today!
She also spent time sitting up on the edge of her bed with help from the occupational therapists and also sat up in the chair again for a couple of hours. The speech therapists worked with her and the speaking valve near the end of the day when she was tired and they promised to come by early tomorrow so she will be fresh. This is going to be a big week!
