So I guess we forgot it was the weekend. Short staff, no therapists, no activity to speak of. We were so hoping that Beverly would be able to spend some time completely off the vent but no one seemed to know about this expectation. Janie tried to take this in her own hands but was reprimanded, of course! The respiratory therapist was one we had never met before and didn't know much (or care much) about our desire to spend time off the ventilator. In fact, between 6am and 4pm, she came by only twice and said there was no order for trying anything other than the usual treatment. During her last visit she did make a recommendation but again with no order, nothing can happen. I guess we'll wait until Monday.

Friday night was another sleepless night so Beverly tried to stay awake all day, hoping to sleep Saturday night. She did get her hair shampooed and conditioned, a facial and then a complete bath from her favorite nurse, Margie. Margie also put Beverly's speaking valve on for a while so they could really talk nurse to nurse. Beverly's nephew Brad had given her some rubber fingertips like secretaries used to use and she looked at a magazine, turning the pages herself! Beverly's appetite seems to be coming back some. Sandwiches from home seem to do the trick (or she's just eating more to please us). She's looking forward to Leonard's visit on Sunday and expects to have a visit from Norma as well.
