During this first month since Beverly’s accident, we have tried to provide you with information on her recovery and have been mostly focusing on her health and comfort. We now have to share with you some very disturbing information.
We knew that Beverly didn’t have a great personal health insurance policy, but had no idea how inadequate is was until we were informed by the OLOL case worker when starting Beverly’s third week in ICU. We still weren’t too concerned, because we knew that Beverly was covered, as a volunteer worker, by an insurance policy through the Baptist Convention Disaster Relief. This policy also was completely inadequate. There basically is no insurance for this catastrophic injury. Beverly will be eligible for Medicare when she turns 65 in June 2009, but that doesn’t help us now. She is not eligible for Medicaid.
So now this wonderful woman is lying in a hospital bed while days that are critical for her rehabilitation are passing by. We can’t find a spinal cord injury rehabilitation facility that will accept her into a rehabilitation program. Our society will take care of just about anyone who can’t take care of themselves, even convicted criminals and people in our country illegally. Why can’t we find help for Beverly, who was helping others at the time of her accident? Please don’t let Beverly fall through - not a crack, but this huge crevasse. Yes – she should have had a better insurance policy. She would have if she felt she could afford it. "I hate it that I am mad at her for supporting foreign medical missions instead of spending that money on her own insurance. Now I’m even angry that she faithfully tithed at her church instead of spending it on her own health insurance. How did we let her mortgage her house to help with our aging mother’s financial needs instead of providing for her own health insurance?"
So many of you have asked what you can do, and now we will tell you how you can help.
We need a lawyer familiar with insurance and personal injury willing to take our case pro bono. Do you know anyone, or know someone who might know someone?
We need to find a rehabilitation facility that will accept Beverly even though she is un-insured, or we need to find an organization that will cover her astronomical expenses.
We need as much publicity as possible to hopefully reach someone, somewhere, who can help us.
At this point we are not seeking financial contributions, but in the near future will have a fund established for those who wish to donate.
Please help get Beverly’s story to every ear you can reach. We have not informed Beverly of any of this. She thinks she if fully covered. We want her energies devoted only to getting better.
