We saw several smiles from Deedy today during our visits. I think she was just making fun of us since we couldn't figure out what she was trying to tell us. I know how frustrating that must be. While she did have a few short "trials" with the speaking valve and oxygen, she tired quickly so went back to the pressure assist on the ventilator which is attached to the tracheostomy.
FINALLY, Janie, Pauletta and Steve met with the surgeon, Dr. Mitchell. He continues to be pleased with her progress and stated that many of other symptoms that are occurring are to be expected with this type of spinal cord injury. Her blood pressure is good and she's been off any blood pressure medication for three days now. Her heart rate is sometimes irregular but is under control. He said that as far as the surgery is concerned, she is ready to be transferred. The only thing stopping her is her struggle with her breathing, although she IS making progress. We also met briefly with the intensivist, Dr. Vincent, who is also a pulmonary doctor. He also said that Deedy can be ready for transfer as soon as her breathing improves. In fact, he has requested that she be moved to the respiratory wing here at Lady of the Lake. Here she will have respiratory specialists working with her on her breathing, and all other vital signs will be constantly monitored of course. This move will most likely happen on Sunday. Visiting hours are not so restrictive on this wing so Deedy may really get tired of seeing us now.
We are still hopeful that a transfer will happen near the end of this next week. Details will be posted here as soon as we have them.
