Janie, Pauletta and Steve visited with Deedy four times throughout the day as usual. Each time she was resting when we arrived, but did open her eyes when we got too loud with our stories, or reading your emails, or talking to the nurses. Talking was more difficult today and our ability to understand was slow. She's trying to use complete sentences and we couldn't keep up.
The respiratory therapist has her doing "trials" to see how well she does without the ventilator and just an oxygen mask. This is still difficult to do for very long, but she lasted an hour during the 5pm visiting period. She really wanted to keep it up even though her breathing was labored and short the last several minutes. When we would ask her if she was ready to quit - she would said "NO". That's the fighting spirit we all know and love. The breathing trials will continue each day and will hopefully get easier and longer each time. No confirmed information about the date and destination of her transfer.
